Dreamforce 2010 – Database.com Launch Interview with Eric Stahl

by

CRM Analyst,

The big announcement at this year's Dreamforce conference is the launch of Database.com, an enterprise database built for the cloud. It's a general pupose, relational database that can be used with any app, written in any language, running on any platform or natively on mobile devices.

We had the privilege of speaking with Salesforce.com before the official announcement. In this clip, Don Fornes, CEO of Software Advice, gets a pre-briefing from Eric Stahl, Senior Director of Product Marketing. We'll be posting more analysis once we gather our thoughts on this announcement. In the meantime, stay tuned for more coverage from Dreamforce 2010!

Interesting that the social components would have a key position in a discussion about core infrastructure technology. That aside… Salesforce are masters at repackaging things that have existed for years. They are essentially selling Oracle DB technology in a SaaS model, which is probably a good way to shake things up if nothing else. Microsoft Azure, GoogleBase, and a host of others will be right there shucking n jiving with them. Look for Saleforce servers next…wait maybe they are already doing that via the VMware partnering…I wonder when they will change their name?

This is not quite like selling Oracle DB in a SaaS model for several reasons. databse.com delivers relational data but its real power is that it provides a fault tolerant multi-tenancy which is different from any other database on the market. Certainly it competes with other products but that doesn’t mean it is the same.
